Shark Attacks

Shark attacks are extremely rare, with just 57 confirmed cases of unprovoked bites in 2022 across the United States. However, if you're swimming in the ocean, there are ways to minimize your chances of being bitten.

  • Avoid potential shark feeding grounds with lots of fish or seals
  • Swim in groups, or at least with a partner
  • Don’t enter the water if you're bleeding or wearing shiny jewelry, as this can attract sharks
  • Avoid swimming in dirty, murky water that can obscure your vision
  • Stay close to the shore and check with lifeguards or other authorities for specific, regional information
  • Avoid swimming in the ocean at dusk, dawn or at night

If you are injured in a shark attack, it's critical to call 911 or seek immediate medical attention at the nearest emergency department.
